Demolition has officially begun at Sports Backers Stadium, marking a major milestone in the continued development of Richmond’s Diamond District. The demolition follows the execution of key agreements between the Richmond Economic Development Authority, Virginia Commonwealth University, and development partners that paved the way for redevelopment of the 6.6-acre site.

The removal of the former track-and-field facility clears land needed for the next phase of the Diamond District project, which includes new residential development, retail and office space, hospitality uses, public parks, and supporting infrastructure surrounding CarMax Park.

The stadium sale agreement, valued at approximately $25 million, allows the EDA to acquire the property while an access agreement enables site and infrastructure work to proceed ahead of the final property transfer.

The demolition represents another visible step forward for the Diamond District, one of Richmond’s largest mixed-use redevelopment initiatives, and supports future plans for expanded housing, commercial development, public green space, and transportation improvements in the area.
